# Bipolar Disorder Treatment in Delhi and Online

This is the markdown version of https://drvohras.com/conditions/bipolar-disorder, a page of Dr Vohra's, a psychiatry and psychology clinic in New Delhi. It is information, not medical advice; the clinic's contact details are at the end.

Bipolar disorder is a condition of episodes: periods of mania or hypomania (high energy, little sleep, racing thoughts, risky decisions) and periods of depression, with stable periods between. It is a psychiatrist's condition: diagnosis is clinical, and treatment is long-term medication (mood stabilisers such as lithium or valproate, or certain antipsychotics) with regular blood monitoring, plus psychoeducation and a relapse plan. Dr Vohra's manages bipolar disorder in person at East Patel Nagar, New Delhi, and online for follow-ups.

## Bipolar I and bipolar II

Bipolar I (ICD-11 6A60) includes at least one manic episode, which may need hospital care. Bipolar II (6A61) involves hypomania, a milder high, together with depressive episodes, and is often misdiagnosed as depression for years because people rarely complain about feeling good. A careful history of past highs, and a family history, is how the psychiatrist tells them apart.

## How is bipolar disorder treated at Dr Vohra's?

Acute episodes are treated first: mania with an antipsychotic or mood stabiliser, bipolar depression with specific options (quetiapine, lurasidone, lamotrigine or lithium) rather than an antidepressant alone, which can trigger a switch into mania.

Then maintenance: a mood stabiliser continued long term, with blood tests (lithium levels, thyroid and kidney function, or liver function and blood counts for valproate) at scheduled intervals. Follow-ups are monthly at first, then every two to three months. Psychoeducation for the patient and family covers early warning signs, sleep protection and a written plan for what to do when signs appear. Therapy (CBT or interpersonal and social rhythm therapy) reduces relapse.

## Living with bipolar disorder

With consistent treatment, most people with bipolar disorder work, study and raise families; the goal of treatment is long stable periods and short, early-caught episodes.

- Keep sleep regular; sleep loss is the most common trigger of mania
- Avoid alcohol and stimulants
- Take medication every day, including when well
- Keep a mood diary and share it at follow-ups
- Agree with family what they should watch for

## Frequently asked questions

- **Is bipolar disorder lifelong?**: Yes, but it is manageable. Long-term treatment prevents most episodes, and episodes that do occur are shorter when caught early.
- **Can bipolar disorder be managed online?**: Follow-ups, psychoeducation and therapy can be online once a diagnosis is established and treatment is stable. Blood tests are done locally and shared with the psychiatrist.
