## When should a child or teenager see a psychiatrist?

When a change in mood, sleep, behaviour or schoolwork has lasted more than a few weeks; when a teacher has raised attention or learning concerns; when a teenager withdraws, stops eating normally, talks about self-harm or seems to be using substances; or when a developmental concern (speech, social interaction, repetitive behaviours) needs a proper assessment.

The first appointment lasts about an hour and includes time with the child alone and with the parents. School reports and any earlier assessments help.

## What is treated

Treatment plans are built with the family. Therapy for children is play- or activity-based with a psychologist; for teenagers it is usually CBT or DBT skills. Medication, when used, is reviewed regularly.

- ADHD in children and adolescents: assessment, parent and school strategies, and medication where appropriate
- Autism spectrum concerns: assessment and referral for therapies
- Anxiety, school refusal and exam stress
- Depression and self-harm in adolescents
- Screen, gaming and substance use
- Eating problems
- Anger and conduct difficulties
- Sleep problems

## Parent guidance

Most plans include sessions for parents: how to respond to behaviour at home, how to work with the school, and when to step back. These are available online for parents who cannot travel.

## Frequently asked questions

- **Does my child need to come in person?**: For a first assessment, yes, where possible. Follow-ups and parent sessions are often online.
- **Will my teenager's conversations be confidential?**: Within the limits of safety, yes. The psychiatrist explains to both the teenager and the parents what is shared and what is not.
- **Is this an emergency service?**: No. Dr Vohra's is an outpatient clinic. In a mental health emergency in India, call Tele-MANAS 14416 or KIRAN 1800-599-0019 (both 24x7 and free), or 112 for emergency services.
