# How the Stressometer Was Validated

This is the markdown version of https://drvohras.com/stressometer/validation, a page of Dr Vohra's, a psychiatry and psychology clinic in New Delhi. It is information, not medical advice; the clinic's contact details are at the end.

The Stressometer's 55 items were refined over 14 years of clinical use, tested with the University of Houston, and compared against three established instruments: the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Stressometer (SOM) scale from the research literature. Internal consistency across the five dimensions is a Cronbach's alpha of 0.935, and the work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the Indian Journal of Psychiatry. This page states what has been shown; it does not claim diagnostic accuracy, because the instrument is a screen.

## Structure

Five dimensions: Human Nature; Life Circumstances; Clinical Symptoms; Domestic Life; Professional Life. Each dimension is scored and banded Green, Yellow, Orange or Red; the overall profile recommends a level of care from self-help to psychiatric evaluation.

## Reliability

Cronbach's alpha of 0.935 across the instrument, which indicates high internal consistency (values above 0.9 are considered excellent for a screening scale).

## Comparison with established scales

Scores were compared with the DASS, PSS and SOS scales in validation samples, establishing convergent validity: people who score high on the Stressometer score high on these scales too. The comparison supports its use as a screen for stress and emotional distress; it is not a diagnostic test for any ICD-11 condition.

## Publication

The instrument and its validation have been published in peer-reviewed journals including the Indian Journal of Psychiatry. Citations will be listed on this page as they are confirmed; the clinic can share the papers on request.
