Exam Stress in Students

Some exam pressure sharpens performance; exam anxiety that brings panic, blank-outs, sleeplessness, stomach pain, or thoughts of not wanting to live is a treatable problem, not a character flaw. Signs that a student needs help: sleep falling below six hours for weeks, refusing food, panic attacks, withdrawing from everyone, or any talk of self-harm. A psychologist treats exam anxiety with CBT in a few sessions; a psychiatrist is needed where depression, severe anxiety or ADHD underlies it.

What parents and teachers can do

  • Protect sleep over extra study hours; memory consolidates in sleep
  • Fixed meals, movement every day, no all-nighters
  • Talk about effort and process, not ranks and comparisons
  • Watch for the signs above and ask, without lecturing
  • Reduce your own visible anxiety; students read it

What treatment looks like

A psychologist teaches CBT skills for exam anxiety: breathing and grounding for panic, study planning, challenging catastrophic predictions, and graded practice under exam conditions. Usually 4 to 8 sessions, in person or online. Where a student also has depression, an anxiety disorder or ADHD, a psychiatrist assesses and treats it; the clinic's child and adolescent psychiatry work covers school-age students, and adult psychiatry covers college and competitive-exam candidates. The Stressometer student version screens stress across life areas in 10 to 15 minutes and can be used by institutions for whole cohorts.
