Clinicians
What happens in a psychiatric consultation?
The psychiatrist asks about what brought you in, how long it has been going on, your sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, mood, thoughts, work or studies, relationships, medical history, substances, and any earlier treatment. Past prescriptions or reports are useful if you have them.
From that, the psychiatrist forms a diagnosis or a working formulation, explains it in plain language, and proposes a plan: talk therapy with one of the clinic's psychologists, medication with scheduled reviews, both, or watchful waiting with a follow-up date. Blood tests are sometimes requested before medication (thyroid, vitamins, metabolic markers) and can be arranged through the clinic's pathology oversight.
Who should see a psychiatrist rather than a psychologist?
See a psychiatrist first when symptoms are severe or have lasted for weeks, when sleep or appetite have changed markedly, when there are thoughts of self-harm, when a condition may need medication (bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, severe depression, OCD, ADHD), or when a previous treatment has stopped working. See a psychologist first for relationship difficulties, stress, grief, mild anxiety or low mood, and for skills-based therapy. Many patients see both; the two coordinate within the clinic.
In person or online?
Both formats follow the same structure. In-person visits suit first evaluations, children, and anyone who prefers to meet face to face. Online consultations run on secure video or voice and are used by patients across India and abroad; they follow the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines (2020) issued by the Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India, which allow registered medical practitioners to consult, diagnose and prescribe most medicines remotely, with some exceptions for controlled drugs.
Follow-ups are often online after an in-person first visit.
