Before the appointment
- Book by phone, WhatsApp or the contact form; the team confirms the time, clinician and fee
- Bring past prescriptions, reports and test results if you have them
- Write down what you want to say and the questions you want to ask
- For a child, a parent or guardian attends; school reports help
- For online: a private room, a charged phone or laptop, a stable connection
During the appointment
The psychiatrist or psychologist asks open questions first, then specific ones. Expect questions about sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, mood through the day, worry, unusual experiences, alcohol and substances, past episodes, family history, and how you are managing day to day. You will be asked about thoughts of self-harm; it is a routine question, asked of everyone, and answering honestly helps.
Towards the end, the clinician explains what they think is going on, in plain language, and proposes a plan. You can ask anything: what the diagnosis means, what the medicine does, how long treatment will take, what it will cost.
What you leave with
- A diagnosis or a working formulation
- A plan: therapy, medication, both, or watchful waiting
- A prescription if medication is part of the plan, sent electronically for online visits
- Requests for blood tests where needed
- A follow-up date, usually within two to four weeks
- Who to contact if things worsen before then
After the first visit
Follow-ups are shorter and often online. Therapy, if recommended, is scheduled weekly with a psychologist. Medication is reviewed at each follow-up; changes are expected in the first weeks and are normal.
