Qualifications and registration
In India a psychiatrist holds MBBS plus MD (Psychiatry), DNB (Psychiatry) or DPM. Registration numbers can be checked on the Delhi Medical Council or NMC registers. A psychologist is a different profession (MA or MPhil in Clinical Psychology, RCI registration) and cannot prescribe; both are valuable, and the page on psychiatrist vs psychologist explains which to see first.
Fit for your problem
- Children and teenagers: a psychiatrist who sees them regularly, with psychologists for therapy and parent work
- ADHD in adults: experience with assessment, and in-person availability for prescriptions
- Addiction: an outpatient de-addiction programme with family involvement
- Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia: long-term follow-up and monitoring in place
- Anxiety, OCD, depression: a clinic where therapy and medication are coordinated
Practical questions to ask
Reviews and rankings tell you less than a clear answer to these questions.
- What are the fees for a first visit and a follow-up?
- How long is the first consultation?
- Is online follow-up available, and in which languages?
- Who provides therapy, and do you work together?
- How are prescriptions and reports shared?
- What happens if I need help between appointments?

Frequently asked questions
- Should I see a psychiatrist at a hospital or a clinic?
- Either can be right. A clinic offers continuity with one doctor and coordinated therapy; a hospital adds admission facilities. For most outpatient conditions a clinic with a referral pathway is sufficient.
- Do I need a referral?
- No. You can book a psychiatrist directly in India.
