How CBT works
A session has a shape: review of the week and the practice task, one or two problems worked through, a new task to try before the next session. The work is practical: noticing the automatic thought behind a feeling, testing it against the evidence, trying a behaviour the anxiety has been preventing, and keeping a record of what happened.
For OCD the CBT form used is exposure and response prevention (ERP): facing the trigger in a planned, graded way while not performing the compulsion. For panic it is interoceptive exposure and dropping safety behaviours. For insomnia it is CBT-I, which rebuilds the link between bed and sleep through sleep scheduling and stimulus control.
What CBT is good for
CBT works alongside medication where a psychiatrist has prescribed it; the two are more effective together than either alone for moderate to severe depression and OCD.
- Depression, including relapse prevention after medication
- Generalised anxiety, social anxiety and health anxiety
- Panic disorder and agoraphobia
- OCD (as ERP)
- Insomnia (as CBT-I)
- Stress, burnout and exam anxiety
- PTSD (as trauma-focused CBT)
What to expect between sessions
CBT asks for 20 to 30 minutes of practice most days: a thought record, an exposure task, a sleep diary. People who do the between-session work improve faster, and the therapist adjusts tasks to what is realistic for you.
Frequently asked questions
- How many CBT sessions will I need?
- Usually 8 to 16 weekly sessions. Panic and specific phobias often need fewer; OCD and long-standing depression often need more.
- Does CBT work online?
- Yes. Video CBT has comparable outcomes to in-person CBT in trials for depression and anxiety. Worksheets and records are shared on screen or by email.
- Is this an emergency service?
- No. Dr Vohra's is an outpatient clinic. In a mental health emergency in India, call Tele-MANAS 14416 or KIRAN 1800-599-0019 (both 24x7 and free), or 112 for emergency services.
