ADHD Assessment and Treatment in Delhi

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ICD-11 6A05) is a neurodevelopmental condition of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that starts in childhood and persists into adulthood in about half of cases. At Dr Vohra's, Dr. Aditya Vohra assesses children, teenagers and adults with a structured clinical interview, rating scales and, for children, school input; treatment combines medication where it is appropriate, skills-based therapy, and strategies for school or work. First assessments are in person at East Patel Nagar, New Delhi; follow-ups can be online.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

There is no blood test or scan for ADHD. The diagnosis rests on a detailed history of symptoms across settings (home and school, or home and work), their onset before age 12, their impact, and the exclusion of other explanations such as anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation, thyroid problems or learning difficulties. Standardised rating scales (for adults, the ASRS; for children, parent and teacher scales) support the interview. For adults, a parent's or sibling's memory of childhood is helpful; old report cards too.

ADHD in adults

Adult ADHD is often missed, especially the inattentive form and especially in women. It looks like chronic lateness, unfinished projects, lost documents, impulsive spending, job changes, and a lifetime of being told to try harder. Many adults seek assessment after their child is diagnosed. Treatment, where the diagnosis is confirmed, usually changes work and relationships within weeks.

How is ADHD treated at Dr Vohra's?

Medication is the most effective single treatment. In India, methylphenidate (short- and long-acting) and atomoxetine are the main options; the psychiatrist chooses based on age, other conditions and side-effect profile, starts low and reviews every two to four weeks until the dose is right. Stimulant prescriptions need an in-person consultation.

Alongside medication: CBT for adults focused on planning, time and emotion regulation; parent training and school strategies for children; and, where needed, treatment of co-occurring anxiety, depression or sleep problems.

Frequently asked questions

Can ADHD be diagnosed online?
An initial consultation can be online, but a first prescription of a stimulant requires an in-person visit under Indian telemedicine rules. Follow-ups can be online.
Do adults grow out of ADHD?
Hyperactivity often fades; inattention and impulsivity persist in about half of adults who had ADHD as children.
Is ADHD medication safe long term?
Methylphenidate and atomoxetine have decades of safety data. Regular reviews check blood pressure, appetite, sleep and growth in children.
