When to see a psychologist
For stress, grief, relationship difficulties, mild to moderate anxiety or low mood, exam or work pressure, anger, sleep problems, and for skills-based therapy for a diagnosed condition. For severe symptoms, thoughts of self-harm, or conditions that usually need medication (bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, severe depression or OCD), see a psychiatrist first; the clinic's page on psychiatrist vs psychologist explains the difference.
What therapy is offered
Sessions are 45 to 50 minutes (60 for couples), usually weekly.
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), including exposure and response prevention for OCD and CBT-I for insomnia
- Rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT) for anger, stress and self-criticism
- Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) skills for emotion regulation
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction and cognitive therapy
- Couples, marriage and family therapy
- Child and adolescent therapy, with parent guidance
- Supportive counselling for grief, transitions and decisions
How to choose a psychologist
Check qualifications (MA or MPhil in Clinical Psychology; RCI registration for clinical psychologists), experience with your kind of problem, the approach they use, language, and whether they can coordinate with a psychiatrist. Ask about fees and the likely number of sessions at the first visit.
