What couples therapy looks like
The first session is with both partners and maps the problem as each sees it. The psychologist then works on the cycle the couple is caught in, the needs underneath the conflict, and concrete changes to try between sessions. Individual sessions may be added. Therapy does not take sides and does not decide for a couple whether to stay together; it makes the decision clearer and the conversation possible.
Family therapy
Family sessions are used when a child's or parent's difficulty is held in place by how the family works, when a diagnosis such as schizophrenia or addiction needs the family's understanding and support, or when generations are in conflict in a joint household. Sessions involve whoever is relevant and can mix in-person and online attendance.
