Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a skills-based therapy for people whose emotions run high and fast: intense anger, mood swings within a day, impulsive decisions, stormy relationships, or urges to self-harm. At Dr Vohra's, psychologists teach the four DBT skill sets (mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness) in individual sessions, in person or online, usually over three to six months.

Who DBT helps

DBT was developed for borderline personality traits and chronic self-harm, and has since been adapted for eating disorders, substance use, adolescents and anyone whose main difficulty is managing strong emotion. It is a good fit when the problem is not what you think but how fast feelings take over.

The four skill sets

Each skill is practised between sessions and reviewed with a diary card. Where risk is present, the psychologist and a psychiatrist at the clinic plan safety together.

  • Mindfulness: noticing what is happening in the moment without acting on it
  • Distress tolerance: getting through a crisis without making it worse
  • Emotion regulation: understanding, naming and changing emotional responses
  • Interpersonal effectiveness: asking for what you need and saying no while keeping relationships

DBT with medication

Many people doing DBT also take medication for depression, anxiety or mood instability prescribed by one of the clinic's psychiatrists. The combination is coordinated within the clinic.

Frequently asked questions

Is DBT the same as CBT?
DBT grew out of CBT and shares its structure, but adds acceptance and mindfulness skills and focuses on emotion regulation rather than on changing thoughts.
How long does DBT take?
A full skills cycle takes about six months of weekly sessions. Shorter, targeted skills work takes 8 to 12 sessions.
