How outpatient de-addiction works
The first visit establishes what is used, how much, for how long, and what it has done to health, work and relationships. Blood tests check the liver and other organs where relevant. A plan follows: planned detoxification with medicines to make withdrawal safe (alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can be dangerous and should not be attempted alone), anti-craving medication (for alcohol, naltrexone or acamprosate; for opioids, buprenorphine-based treatment through licensed channels; for tobacco, varenicline or nicotine replacement), and weekly therapy.
Follow-ups are frequent in the first three months and taper as stability builds. Family sessions help relatives respond without enabling or policing.
When is admission needed?
In those cases the clinic refers to a hospital or licensed centre and continues care after discharge.
- Severe alcohol withdrawal with a history of seizures or delirium
- No safe environment for a home detox
- Repeated failed outpatient attempts
- Serious medical or psychiatric complications
Behavioural addictions
Gaming, gambling, social media and pornography addictions are treated with CBT-based therapy, often with family involvement for teenagers, and medication for co-occurring depression or ADHD where present.
Frequently asked questions
- Is de-addiction treatment confidential?
- Yes. Treatment at the clinic is confidential in the same way as any medical care.
- Do you treat addiction online?
- Assessment, therapy, family sessions and most follow-ups can be online. Detoxification and some medicines need in-person visits and tests.
- Is this an emergency service?
- No. Dr Vohra's is an outpatient clinic. In a mental health emergency in India, call Tele-MANAS 14416 or KIRAN 1800-599-0019 (both 24x7 and free), or 112 for emergency services.
