Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)

REBT, developed by Albert Ellis in the 1950s, is the original cognitive therapy. It works on the rigid demands behind distress ("I must succeed", "people must treat me fairly", "I can't stand this") and replaces them with flexible preferences. At Dr Vohra's it is used by psychologists for anger, stress and burnout, performance anxiety, low self-worth and procrastination, in person or online.

The ABC model

REBT separates the activating event (A) from the belief about it (B) and the emotional consequence (C). The event is often not changeable; the belief is. Sessions identify the demand, dispute it logically and empirically, and build a new belief that is rehearsed until it holds under pressure.

Unlike some therapies, REBT is direct: the psychologist will challenge a belief in the room and ask you to practise the alternative between sessions.

What REBT is used for

REBT is typically brief: 6 to 12 sessions for a defined problem.

  • Anger and irritability
  • Work stress and burnout
  • Performance and exam anxiety
  • Shame, guilt and harsh self-criticism
  • Procrastination and low frustration tolerance

Frequently asked questions

REBT or CBT, which should I choose?
They overlap heavily. REBT suits people who want a direct, philosophical approach to demands and self-rating; CBT suits structured work on specific symptoms. Your psychologist will suggest one after the first session.
